Plastic or cosmetic surgery can often be associated with women. However, men are just as important candidates for many of the same procedures as women. As we age, gravity inevitably takes a hold, and our ability to fend off fat storage grows harder with time. Men are no different with regards to this and often have areas of fat that seem to persist even with a healthy diet and exercise.
Liposuction, the procedure to remove fat cells by way of suction cannulas, is a fantastic option to combat those hard to treat areas of fat (adipose tissue). Most often men will receive liposuction on their chest, abdomen, back, and flanks (“love handles”). (Speaking of “love handles,” check out this SPECIAL on surgery!) There is no worry of having visible incisions as they are concealed typically along pant lines (depending on the area of liposuction) and are on average less than 1cm in length. Liposuction permanently removes those fat cells. However, the remaining fat cells can increase in size to store fat if necessary so maintaining a healthy lifestyle will ensure your liposuction results will last.
Liposuction is an outpatient surgery with an approximately two-week recovery, mostly consisting on limiting physical activity during that time to allow your body to heal. There are no dressing changes or wound care following a liposuction surgery, but you will require a compression garment such as an Under Armour undershirt, athletic/cycling compression shirt, or abdominal binder depending on the liposuction site(s). Resistant areas of fat affect both men and women alike and liposuction may be an option for you to optimize the contour of your body.
